Mr. Sim Buck Teik, now in his eighties and honored with the title of "Living Heritage Treasure of Penang," presides over Seang Hin Leong on Beach Street. Though he no longer works full-time, he still spends most of his days at the shop, relishing the breeze from the street. Assisting him in the business are his son, Mr. Sim Hin Leong, and his daughter, Ms. Sim Jeck Choo. Buck Teik learned the craft techniques from his father in Teochew, China, before the family relocated to Malaya, now known as Malaysia.

Seang Hin Leong specializes in crafting furniture and household objects from rattan and bamboo. The family's expertise lies in rattan weaving, allowing them to fulfill custom orders of all shapes and sizes. They also offer repair services and conduct rattan weaving classes for tourists, priced reasonably at RM80.

In addition to their handmade items, Seang Hin Leong sells ready-made products sourced from China, Indonesia, and Singapore. While business has slowed compared to the past, the Sim family remains committed to growing their business and preserving the art of rattan weaving. They primarily source rattan supplies from Pahang.

Rattan's durability is well-known, but proper treatment is essential to prevent fragility. Before weaving, the rattan is soaked in water to enhance flexibility, ensuring it doesn't break during the process. Buck Teik meticulously smoothens the rattan surfaces with a knife to prevent any sharp edges that could cause harm. The range of products includes furniture and unique items like handbags crafted from rattan, with smaller decorative pieces taking a day to complete and furniture several days, depending on size.

Seang Hin Leong's customer base consists mainly of locals, with fixed prices displayed on each item. Alongside rattan products, the shop also sells souvenirs such as keychains and wooden spoons.

Buck Teik cherishes the tranquil environment around his shop and appreciates that the street remains quiet, allowing customers to easily park. He takes pride in seeing his children continue his legacy with passion and dedication to rattan weaving, ensuring the longevity of his business.
